Six Sigma – simply improves what you do.

six sigmaSix sigma is a great tool to have at your disposal, and having people who can use it effectively can give you an edge over your competitors. When your organisation provides a product or a service for your customer, you want it to be as high a quality as possible every time. That will serve to build customer satisfaction, confidence, and increase loyalty.

Where you are able to delivery a planned and value adding outcome for your customer, you will be sustaining the long term future of your people, organisation, and position as a credible player in your sector.

Six sigma is all about using a planned process that leads to the elimination of unwanted variance against what you want to delivery for your customers. The definition of six sigma achieving process is one where 99.99966% of all opportunities are defect free. That is an equivalent of 3.4 defects per million opportunities. Does your organisation achieve that? IiE helps organisations that want to work towards becoming true six sigma performing operations.

One of the approaches to take is known as DMAIC. This acronym breaks down as follows in looking at the best ways to plan improvement for projects and processes where defects are evident.

Define

  • Define the system, and what the customer requirements are, and the specific project goals.

Measure

  • Measure key aspects of the current process, and use collected relevant data to help calculate the capability of the ‘as-is’ Process.

Analyse

  • Analyse data to investigate, establish, and verify “cause-and-effect” relationships. Determine what the relationships are, ensuring that all factors have been considered. Seek out root cause of the defect under investigation.

Improve

  • Improve or optimise the current process based upon data analysis using learned techniques, to create a new, future state process. Set up pilot runs to establish process capability.

Control

  • Control the future state process to ensure that any deviations from the target are corrected before they become defects. Implement control systems, and continuously monitor the process for performance. This process is repeated until the desired quality level is obtained.
