HM Prison Leeds receives the Investors in Excellence Standard recognising strong performance

HM Prison Leeds has been awarded the prestigious Investors in Excellence Standard for its strong all-round performance, receiving particular praise for its activity to prevent re-offending.

Providing a universal mark of excellence for both businesses and public sector organisations, the IiE Standard covers a range of key business areas including leadership, service delivery and results.

Ian Nield, Chief Executive of Investors in Excellence, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for HM Prison Leeds which has shown itself to be truly committed to continuous improvement and becomes the first public sector prison to achieve the Investors in Excellence Standard.

“Among many strengths highlighted by our assessors were a clarity of common purpose, successful partnerships and forward-thinking approaches including a seven-point plan, implemented by the Governor, to prevent re-offending.

“Without exception the staff encountered were focused and very motivated to make their personal contribution to improve the quality of prison life and future prospects for prisoners. This recognition is very well-deserved.”

HM Prison Leeds joins a string of organisations to have achieved the IiE Standard including household names such as BMW and Siemens.

HMP Leeds has been in operation since 1847 and is classed as a ‘Local Prison’ which primarily serves the Courts within the West Yorkshire area. The prison has a capacity of 1120 inmates, with around 30,000 prisoner movements a year and around 5000 new prisoners a year.

Paul Baker, Governor HM Prison Leeds, said: “We are thrilled and very proud to be recognised as an Investor in Excellence. The Standard is very testing as it covers all key business areas including leadership, people and customer results. With such significant change now in motion we need to ensure that the whole establishment is involved in delivering these outcomes.

“At HM Prison Leeds we want to strive to deliver excellence not only as a public sector organisation but show that we can be compared to the best companies in the private sector.”
